COMMENTARY: WAR

previous

What If?

What if we became bogged down in a war that began as a mistake and remained a mistake? If we found ourselves in such a war, would there be members of Congress foolish enough to say that we should pursue the war in order to justify the deaths of the already fallen? Would any members of Congress say that we should not withdraw from the mistaken and futile enterprise because it would encourage those who are hostile to us? Would someone proclaim that the fighting and dying should continue because to withdraw would be surrender? Would someone like Senator McCain not want to give up the fight?

What is the capacity for foolishness in this home of the brave and land of the free? The American people are not stupid, but let us hope that in the decades ahead we will not be putting our congress people and a portion of our citizenry to the test as were another people in 1900s who were also not stupid.
