Ayaan Hirsi Ali and today's craven politicians wishing to align themselves with public opinion against the Muslim center in Manhattan brings to mind the cowardice of Dutch neighbors of Ayaan in the Netherlands back in 2006 – albeit a different kind of cowardice. The cowardice that appeared among these particular neighbors of Ayaan involved fear. Some Germans were afraid of standing against Hitler's policies regarding the Jews, but they had their preservation to fear. Ayaan's neighbors were under no such pressure.
To protect Ayaan from Muslim killers, the Dutch government moved her to a neighborhood where her neighbors began to complain that living near Ayaan was an unacceptable security risk – although the police had testified in court that it was one of the safest places in the country because of the personnel they had assigned to protect Ayaan.
It is unfortunate that Ayaan's neighbors had so little of the courage that she had.
