Horace Greeley

Horace Greeley

Publisher of the New York Tribune and supporter of Abraham Lincoln. After Lincoln's election he tried to calm the fears of Southern whites. He was opposed to the North forcing abolition of slavery on the South. He believed abolition should be done by Southerners themselves. Southerners were hysterical following the election of Lincoln. Greeley's opinions were largely unknown in the South. Southern postmasters had refused to distribute his newspaper there.
