72.7 percent Muslim 1931 – Sunni Muslims. Sind is where Islam first arrived on the sub-continent. The British ruled there beginning in 1843. In the 1950s, 90 percent of the population was engaged in agriculture, 10 percent in manufacturing. Most of agriculture (57 percent) was rice growing. Manufacturing was largely tiles, pottery and mats. Population in 1951 was recorded at 4.6 million (91 persons per square mile).
