A city in Pakistan near Afghanistan where, as of 2006, many are in sympathy with the Taliban. In Quetta, the General Staff of the Taliban openly meets in running their war in Afghanistan. Quetta is also where family members of Afghanistan's president, Hamid Karzai, still live. Quetta is the capital of Baluchistan Province, an important trade center, with fruit canning and chromite mining among its industries. Population in and around the city in 1995 was 677,000 and growing at a rate of more than 4 percent a year. Dress is Taliban conservative.
