Gaoxiong, or Kao-hsiung

A naval base for the Japanese in World War II. A military port and place of liberty for U.S. ships in the fifties. A shipbuilding, fishing and oil refining center. It developed into one of the world's largest ports for container shipping. It exports rice, sugar and pinapples. Its population in 1986 has been estimated at 1.3 million.
