Fuzhou, previously Foochow

The capital of Fujian province. Traded mainly with coastal cities – food products and timber – distrupted by Chiang Kai-shek's forces. It developed an iron, steel, paper, cotton textiles, and a chemical industry. Its population in 1991 was 1.65 million.
