In 1943, Syria had a population estimated at 2.9 million, in 2001 at 16.5 million. Muslims in 2001 are counted as 91 percent of the population and Christians 9 percent. Also in Syria are some Kurds and Armenians.
The Jewish population in 1943 was counted at 29,770, in 1953 at 31,647. Another account has only 5,000 Jews remaining in Syria by the 1950s.
