A city in Jordan's most fertile agricultural region, fed by the Yarmuk River and several springs. Its population in 1994 estimated at 208,300, in 2001 at 253,000 – possibly not including Palestinian refugees. Another population number, for 1999, is given as 370,000.

Irbid's Yarmuk University, which was founded in 1976, and has faculties in the arts, sciences, economics, education and engineering.
