Sather Gate, University of California at Berkeley

Sather Gate, U.C. Berkeley

A normally tranquil place through the sixties, despite Berkeley's reputation. Just beyond the gate, under the walkway runs a stream, and alongside the stream occasionally sat a guitarist ably playing flamenco. Often around the noon hour, two or more musicians played classical music. In the background is the main library. Behind the photographer is what students had begun calling Red Square, in front of the administration building, Sproul Hall.
