Thebes is a name given this Egyptian city by the Greeks. It grew from a village to became the royal residence and the center of worship of the god Amon during the Eleventh Dynasty, which began in 2134 BCE. Thebes was the center of Egyptian power and empire into the 1200s. Then, with the empire's decline, power shifted north to the Nile delta. In Thebes is the tomb of Tutankhamen.
