Some scholars speculate that originally there was no marriage and that a female having given birth was an attraction in that it proved her fertility. Some believe that the demand for virginity arose with the rise of ownership of land and the passing of land from father to son, and a father wanting to know if a child was actually his. On the other hand, primitive pangs of jealously along with brute power of males over females may also have been involved if not the major source of the demand.
