What If?

What if we became bogged down in a war that began as a mistake and remained a mistake - as many believe was our involvement in Vietnam. But let's keep it hypothetical. If we found ourselves in such a war, would there be members of Congress foolish enough to say that we should pursue the war in order to justify the deaths of the already fallen? Would any members of Congress say that we should not withdraw from the mistaken and futile enterprise because it would encourage those who are hostile to us? Would someone proclaim that the fighting and dying should continue because to withdraw would be surrender? Would Senator McCain realize that the worst that can happen to U.S. troops is not denial of victory but fighting and dying where they should not have been sent in the first place. This is just a what if - a question about capacity for foolishness.

Some, of course, cannot imagine U.S. troops ordered to pursue a futile mission or wishful thinking by those doing the ordering.
